Nordgold’s Lefa mine helps to improve access to drinking water for local communities in Guinea

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, and in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation for all), Nordgold’s Lefa mine will invest 1,500,000,000 GNF (US$ 170,000) in drilling of new boreholes to improved access to drinking water for local communities in Guinea in 2022.

Lefa is one of the country’s largest gold producers and an important contributor to the region’s economic and social development. The mine supports and empowers its host communities through impactful CSR initiatives and implementation of projects that create the conditions for improving local people’s living standards, including through annual investments in Water Access Programme.

This year, the Programme focuses on alleviating water shortages at ten villages, including Bougoulan, Sokoro, Amina, Tombani Bèrè, Maïnou (Maleah), Sabèrèfaran District of Famèrè (Banora), Fontou, Boubèrè, Léro-kourouda and Siguirini.

Nordgold acquired the Lefa mine in 2010. Since then, the Company has invested almost US$1.5 billion into the country thereby maintaining its position as one of Guinea’s leading gold producers. From 2011 to 2021, Nordgold paid Guinea more than US$250 million in corporate taxes and royalties and Lefa provides direct employment to more than 1,300 employees, as well as over 1000 indirect jobs. The Lefa mine has also invested significantly to improve the provision of local health and education services, including the deployment of new medical facilities and construction of 40 schools.
