Nordgold to reforest 18 hectares of land in West Africa in 2022

Nordgold Group («Nordgold» or the «Company»), the internationally diversified gold producer, is pleased to announce that in line with the Company’s Environmental Policy and Statement on Biodiversity Commitment, its mines will reforest 18 hectares of land in Guinea and Burkina Faso in 2022.

In Guinea, the Lefa mine will reforest 15 hectares, planting over 16,500 trees and other plants. The 2022 reforestation programme focuses on areas near new school of Tombani (built by the mine in 2021) and former Kassa-Kassa and Pharmacie open pits.

In Burkina Faso, Nordgold’s Bissa mine provided 9,264 trees to local communities which resulted in reforestation of over 3 hectares with mainly moringa trees.

The Company mines in West Africa annually invest in reforestation programmes to ensure that progressive reforestation preserves biodiversity by the time our mines reach the end of their life cycle.

«At Lefa we operate our own tree nursery with annual capacity of around 20,000 saplings. We use fast growing plants recommendable for local ecosystem which are delivered to the nursery from Australia and Europe. The saplings are then developed for three to four months before we plant them together with the members of the local community»

About Lefa

Nordgold acquired the Lefa mine in 2010. Since then, the Company has invested almost US$1.5 billion into the country thereby maintaining its position as one of Guinea’s leading gold producers.
