Berezitovy Mine Implements Pilot Programme to Protect Local Birds

London, United Kingdom, 27 October 2020 – Nordgold’s Berezitovy gold mine in the Amur Region of Russia has developed a new set of measures, in conjunction with local ornithologists, to protect birds at potential risk from the mine's hydraulic facilities.

An environmental impact assessment at the mine found that there are at least twenty bird species living in the nearby lakes, rivers and forests. To prevent waterfowl from entering the mine’s hydraulic facilities, after consultation with a team of expert ornithologists, a set of protective measures have been developed including the installation of ultrasonic and visual deterrent devices.

The mine has installed Ultrason X ultrasonic systems which are specifically designed for extensive outdoor use and to tolerate extreme temperatures. In addition, the mine plans to use visual deterrents, including special kites, to prevent birds flying by from landing and risking potential harm.

“We are continuing to support the education of children in the Lefa community through investing in educational infrastructure and monthly premiums to 77 community teachers. Our support of Lero’s Clinic and Club Jacob helps to establish a more efficient health system alongside promoting physical activity and well-being. All our efforts are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but more important is that they are guided by the needs of the local people. Over the last 10 years, Lefa has invested, with support of Nordgold, almost US$13 million in the local communities, and we will continue to offer both support and investment.” Evgeny TulubenskyNordgold’s Chief Legal Officer and Director of ESG
