Nordgold’s CEO Nikolai Zelenski speaks at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum

London, United Kingdom, 2 June 2017 - Nikolai Zelenski, CEO of Nordgold, the internationally diversified gold producer, participated at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia’s leading business event (SPIEF), in a roundtable discussion entitled: “Russia-Africa: a structural approach to cooperation in the new economic reality”. The Roundtable focused on Africa’s increasingly active role in international politics and the world economy, and its economic partnership with Russia.

  • CEO Nikolai Zelenski spoke on Thursday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia’s leading business event. Zelensky outlined Nordgold’s positive experience of working in Africa with operations in Burkina Faso and Guinea.
  • Nordgold is Africa’s fourth largest gold producer and the largest producer in Burkina Faso, producing more than 400,000 ounces of gold per year in the country.

Zelenski explained that key to this success has been Nordgold’s deep commitment to openness, transparency and community engagement. Nordgold firmly believes creating sustainable value equates to being responsible stewards of the environment, complying with the highest applicable safety standards, making positive economic and social contributions to communities, and engaging openly and transparently with all stakeholders. This commitment to transparency is key to the way it does business.

Zelenski also offered an insight into building business partnerships between the Russian Federation and African countries. He shared his expertise from operating in the Africa region and expressed his high expectations for the continent’s growing role in the global economy.

“There are several things that attracted us to Africa. One of them is specific to the mining industry, we still can find very high quality deposits in African countries. The second very important thing is that the both governments of Guinea and Burkina Faso are very constructive towards investments of the international companies and in particular towards mining companies. They understand that mining industry brings value not only to the companies themselves but also to the countries where they operate. And the third thing is people. They are hard working, they have willing to learn.

We remain deeply committed to Africa and believe there is still considerable scope for further investment into the continent. Russian business certainly has a role to play, alongside the broader international investment community.” Nikolai ZelenskiChief Executive Officer of Nordgold
